El Salvador responded to the increased energy demand with a greater contribution from renewable sources, according to a report.
Data from the Transactions Unit (UT) indicates that in 2024, energy demand rose by 4.3%. In this context, hydropower and gas accounted for 65.3% of production, while thermal energy contributed 34.7%.
The report highlighted that the highest energy consumption was recorded in March, April, and May, a period when temperatures exceeded 40 degrees Celsius.
The country boasts a diverse range of renewable energy sources, with hydropower and geothermal energy standing out for their contribution to the total of 4,626 GWh nationwide. Hydropower plants produce 44.8% of the total energy in a broad mix that includes solar, wind, and biomass sources. According to experts, this diversity ensures environmental and social benefits in the short, medium, and long term.
