Every December 10th, the world reflects on the need to ensure respect, welfare, and protection for all species.
On International Animal Rights Day, we highlight the importance of guaranteeing dignified and respectful treatment for all living beings. This date, promoted by the organization Uncaged Campaigns since 1998, strategically coincides with Human Rights Day, emphasizing that dignity and responsible care should extend beyond human boundaries to encompass all species.
Animal rights emerge as an ethical and practical necessity in a society striving to be more just. It requires a commitment to safeguard animal welfare, prohibit mistreatment, and ensure adequate living conditions. This aligns with the One Health concept, which advocates for the well-being of people, animals, and a healthy environment—an approach promoted by MSD Animal Health in Central America, the Caribbean, and Ecuador (CENCA EC).
“Animals are an integral part of our ecosystems and our lives. Protecting them means protecting our own existence, as ethical treatment toward them benefits our health, our planet, and even our economy,” explained Gustavo Moraes, General Manager of MSD Animal Health in Central America, the Caribbean, and Ecuador (CENCA EC).
While significant progress has been made in recent decades—such as the enactment of laws against cruelty and the recognition of animals as rights-bearing entities in several countries—there is still a long road ahead.
According to the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), animal welfare is intrinsically linked to public health and environmental sustainability. This underscores the importance of addressing the issue from both an ethical perspective and as a shared responsibility that directly impacts the planet’s balance.
MSD Animal Health specialists emphasize that change begins with individual actions that lead to global impacts. Some of the most effective ways to promote animal rights include:
- Encouraging responsible pet adoption: Opting to adopt and provide homes for animals in need rather than purchasing them.
- Educating younger generations: Instilling values of respect and empathy toward animals from an early age.
- Reducing the ecological footprint: Adopting habits that minimize environmental impact, such as responsible consumption and waste reduction.
Gustavo Moraes, General Manager of MSD Animal Health in Central America, the Caribbean, and Ecuador (CENCA EC), emphasizes that International Animal Rights Day provides an opportunity to evaluate humanity’s relationship with the living beings that share our planet. It is essential to reflect on our responsibility to care for animals and ensure the safety of the food we consume. Through empathy and commitment, we can build a future where all species are treated with dignity and respect. By recognizing our role in animal welfare and sustainability, we contribute to a healthier, more ethical, and respectful future for all.
