This has led to a decrease in violent crimes and homicides, according to the U.S. Department of State.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Tuesday, the United States granted El Salvador the highest possible travel safety rating, placing the country among the least dangerous for American travelers. The decision cites the significant reduction in gang activity and crime.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The U.S. Department of State upgraded the Central American nation from <\/span><b>Level 2<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which advises travelers to exercise increased caution, to <\/span><b>Level 1<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, its safest rating, which simply encourages travelers to take normal precautions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The change comes five months after the U.S. had already upgraded its travel advisory from Level 3 to Level 2. Travel advisories range from Level 1 to Level 4, with Level 1 being the safest.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Central America, <\/span><b>Panama, Costa Rica, and Belize<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> remain at Level 2, while <\/span><b>Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are still classified as Level 3, which carries the recommendation to \u201creconsider travel.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response to the new advisory, El Salvador\u2019s President <\/span><b>Nayib Bukele<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who is expected to be received at the White House next week, stated on X that his country \u201cjust received the U.S. State Department\u2019s travel gold star: <\/span><b>Level 1 \u2013 as safe as it gets.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, <\/span><b>U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said that Bukele\u2019s leadership has been key in improving the country\u2019s safety for international travelers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGang activity, violent crime, and homicides in El Salvador have decreased significantly,\u201d added the top U.S. diplomat, who visited the country in March as part of his tour through Central America and the Dominican Republic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Likewise, <\/span><b>U.S. Ambassador to El Salvador William Duncan<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> emphasized that the updated travel alert is \u201ca significant step forward.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>Trump administration<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has praised Bukele\u2019s offer to house suspected criminals deported from the United States at the <\/span><b>Center for the Confinement of Terrorism (CECOT)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, primarily Venezuelan nationals alleged to be members of the <\/span><b>Tren de Aragua<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> criminal group\u2014an effort aligned with U.S. President\u2019s campaign promise to deport large numbers of migrants.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Deportations from the U.S. to El Salvador<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have become the subject of an ongoing legal battle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just over three years ago, in <\/span><b>March 2022<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Salvadoran government declared a <\/span><b>state of emergency<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in response to a brutal gang attack that left <\/span><b>87 people dead in a single weekend<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
